A Knight Is Sworn To Valor

As we often state, our core values are Trust and Integrity. What we are saying to ourselves, each other, our clients, our opponents, and the world at large is: “You can trust my integrity.” But what does that mean? Lawyers are addressed with the surname “Esq.” which stands for Esquire, from the Latin for Knight. A couple of weeks ago, during a discussion, someone thought about the knight’s head chess piece that is our logo. Being a romantic at heart, I have been impressed by the codes that knights must swear to uphold. The following is one of my favorites, called the Old Code from the movie Dragonheart. (For Lady Knights, please change the pronouns.) "A Knight is sworn to valor. His heart knows only virtue. His blade defends the helpless. His might upholds the weak. His words speak only truth. His wrath undoes the wicked. The right can never die, If one Knight still recalls. The words are not forgotten, If one voice speaks them clear. The code forever shines, If one heart holds it bright.” Thomas D. White Senior Partner www.eques.law
